Introduction

This year the focus of the forum is to generate discourses on how ideas are manifested through built forms, for which we are inviting entries from students of 5th year of architecture. The projects become the main dialogue generators on the academic front of the architectural community. The forum comprises of a series of student and panelist presentations followed by a common discussion. For every session, six selected entries will present for ten minutes and panelists will share their insights through the student’s projects to catalyze the discussion. The common discussion will be a culmination of these ideas. These sessions will be followed by panelist’s lectures.
Iconic Architecture in South Asia

Iconic architecture reflects the identity of a time, place or culture. In the past decade, there has been digital consumption of the architectural image due to globalisation, leading to a cultural shift. This has resulted in a renewed interest in iconic architecture. On the other hand, the term ‘the global south’ has gained substantial traction in the past decade; this holds true for architectural discourse as well, both in academia as well as the profession. Situated at the crossroads of these two phenomena, the intention of this theme is to question the relevance, reinterpretation and the cultural response of iconic architecture in South Asia, through the multiple approaches adopted in students’ final year projects.

Social Responsiveness and Architectural Manifestations

The projects under this theme recognize a specific social group with an insufficiency to survive in the times of rapid and often hostile changes in its context. Therefore, architecture’s intent is to strengthen and reconnect the community with the social system. The exploration in this theme lies in how communities get stimulated through such architecture and the approach to architectural manifestation to create significance. Furthermore, the theme will deliberate the impact of societal, ecological and historical domain’s intersection with the social agenda to unfold an empowered community. .

Human ⊂ Ecology

The projects under this theme have identified some stresses that have been posed onto the ecology by direct or indirect human activities. Hence, they now see the need to redefine socio-cultural constructs to adapt to ecological cycles. In doing so, it is a matter of question whether man is seen as an ecological entity or still positioned in higher interest in the natural cycle. The inquiry here is also in the ethics of resource use, the Ideas and means adopted to build such that they can act as a catalyst in the phenomenon of re-calibrating a distressed ecology.

Building perception:  Extending the learning from the discussions to architectural practices by visiting selected projects across the city.
